A masked man, puppets and the voices of a past
era is all that was needed to tell an evocative story about
life on the docks.
Custom House
man Gavin Skerritt performed the first of three shows of his
play EASTENDA, at the Museum in Docklands last Friday.
The one-man show portrays the life of an “ordinary”
family living through the momentous changes that shaped the
once isolated area.
Skerritt ingeniously
uses puppets and a simple pulley system in his performance,
which is narrated by interviews he recorded with family and
friends as they describe Dock life.
“These
people have gone through huge changes in their lives,”
Skerritt said.
“Many of them lived with real poverty and really depended
on each other – it was an intense life.”
